IBM to turn datacenters into 'computing cloud'

IBM is calling the initiative Blue Cloud, and compared its significance to its decision several years ago to throw its weight behind Linux, which helped the open-source OS become more widely accepted by corporations. Can the small websites compete with the big guys?

I'm often asked by small business owners if they stand a chance against larger websites when it comes to organic search results. My response is that size doesn't matter. When it comes to improving natural search results, it's all about the keywords you choose and how competitive those keywords are.

What makes a keyword competitive?

One way to determine the competitiveness of a search term is to simply type that search term into Google and notice the number of web pages that contain that search term. This number appears in the upper right-hand corner of the search results page and appears as, "Results 1 - 10 of about 228,000,000 for [your search term here]."

The large number you see gives you an indication of how many websites contain the keyword term or phrase you're searching for. Not all of these sites would necessarily be competitors, but have been indexed by Google none-the-less. From my perspective, when this number is less than 3 or 4 million, the particular search term would not be all that competitive in and of itself.

Google readies Gmail for upgrades

Coding changes are to allow for features never envisaged at launch of online email service three years ago

Google has said it is starting to upgrade the underlying application code of its Gmail service to prepare for adding additional functionality never envisaged when it was first launched in 2004.

Gmail engineer Dan Pupius made reference to the roll out of the upgrade in a company blog. "In the past three and a half years we have launched a number of cool features," he said.

Pupius added that the company had learned a lot about building large web applications delivered through a browser.

As such, the updates cross-fertilise a number of features already used in Google's full productivity suite, Google Apps. Elements from Google's Page Creator and Groups services like, for example, the rich-text editor, keyboard shortcuts and email message bookmarks or searches.

Pupius said the new code update would focus on speeding Gmail's performance: "profiling all parts of the application, shaving milliseconds off wherever we can and figuring out workarounds for some pretty deep-rooted issues with the current browser implementations."

Users of the US English version will be the first to benefit from the rollout of these updates, with international users to follow soon after.

But the functionality of third party tools is likely to be affected as a result of the application changes. Pupius said Google would work with developers to bring add-on Gmail tools up to speed in coming weeks and months.

Time to see beyond SEO for Google

According to Zia Zaman, executive vice president of global marketing of Norwegian company Fast Search & Transfer, there is a growing trend of companies hiring SEO consultants to achieve higher search engine rankings.

However, this tactic of increasing a Web site's chances of getting listed among the top few entries of a relevant search result is "shortsighted", and may not result in a big payoff that one might hope, Zaman said.

He explained that a company focusing on SEO is reliant on a search engine's algorithm which is often kept secret. An SEO consultant has to continually adapt to the search engine's algorithm changes which may neither be announced nor easily understood.

"Search has grown up," Zaman said, noting that the three big search giants--Google, Yahoo and Microsoft's Live.com--only get 30 percent of clicks. "The rest of the 70 percent are going to local, vertical or topical sites. Sites which have targeted content.

"People realize that sticking to these [targeted] sites gets them to the end points much sooner, rather than throwing up a generic search in Google and getting hundreds and thousands of links to click. These sites already narrow down the information, specific to what the user's looking for," said Zaman, in an interview with ZDNet Asia.

Shi Heng Cheong, a Singapore-based SEO consultant and blogger agrees and sees this fast-evolving Web search market adding complexities to an SEO consultant's job.

Shi said: "The challenge [for an SEO consultant] will be greater, as it will no longer be the simple correction of mistakes made by Web masters, designers and programmers. In addition to fixing broken Web sites, SEO consultants will need to help businesses be found not only in Google and Yahoo, but also in Web 2.0 sites such as Amazon, eBay, Facebook, MySpace, PRweb, StumbleUpon, Technorati, and YouTube.

"These will be the sites where the target customers will be congregating," he added.

Beyond SEO
But SEO is only half the battle, because beyond attracting clicks, retaining an audience is more important, said John Brand, research director of Hydrasight, in an e-mail interview.

"While [SEO] might [help] organizations find new customers, it rarely has much influence in retaining existing ones. This is where the quality of user experience in the site itself--and the customers' overall experience of the company--comes firmly into play," said Brand.

Fellow Hydrasight analyst Tim O'Brien added that companies need to first ensure a Web site is well-designed before thinking about hiring an SEO consultant.

"It is commonplace for corporations to waste large sums of money on SEO, and in particular, pay-per-click search engine advertising, only for visitors to abandon the Web site upon arrival because it is too hard to understand or navigate," said O'Brien.

As a matter of best practice, SEO should be worked into the development of a Web site from the start, O'Brien added.

"SEO should also be about designing Web pages so that their content can be easily indexed and categorized by the major search engine algorithms. The key is to ensure that the page title and various meta tags accurately reflect the specific content on the page. It is that simple.

"There is simply no point in trying to trick the search engines into believing the page is about something it is not," O'Brien said.

When it comes to off-page factors, the number of the links that point to your website is very important. It's also important that the the links to your website contain your keywords and that the links are from related websites.

All of these factors are important. However, there is another factor that is even more important than the other ones. That single factor will determine whether your search engine optimization activities will be successful or not.

A single factor is more important than all other factors

You might have lots of inbound links with the anchor text "my great product" and your web page might be perfectly optimized for the keyword "my great product".

You might even be number 1 on Google for the keyword "my great product": if the wrong people or too few people search for that keyword then your SEO efforts will be in vain. The most important factor that decides whether you succeed or not are the keywords that you choose for promoting your website.

If you target the wrong keywords, you'll waste a lot of time, energy and money.

What went wrong with the mobile Web?

Futurists and industry analysts have long predicted the ascent of the mobile Web, in which people can traverse the Web using smart phones as easily and fruitfully as they can at their desktops. But almost three years after 3G networks became widely available, few are using it to access the Web with their phones.

Sure, some people use handheld devices to download ringtones and check e-mail -- cellular carriers have been reporting dramatic increases in those sorts of non-Web activities for quite a while. And scanning public places such as airport terminals shows a fair number of mostly business users accessing the Web over 3G networks using PC cards in their laptops.

But browse the Web from your cell phone? "There's no place to go but up," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis Inc.
Market research firm Compete Inc. quantified the failure of the mobile Web recently in a survey of mobile phone subscribers. The April survey of 910 people found that 37% of mobile subscribers had purchased ringtones and other content in the last year. Of those subscribers, only 20% said they accessed the Web with their phones at least once a week.

"And these are people who are very savvy about using their phones," said Miro Kazakoff, a wireless analyst at Boston-based Compete. "I'd be comfortable saying that, of the other 63%, the number accessing the Web with their phones is in single-digit percentages." A recent survey conducted by Ipsos MORI of nearly 1,000 U.K.-based consumers roughly mirrored Compete's findings.

So why are so few people surfing the Web with their phones? And will we eventually enjoy the Web's wealth of content or the powerful new-generation Web applications while we're waiting for the train or in a restaurant. Or will we always wait till
we get back to our desks?
What went wrong?
Kazakoff said the reason there is so little Web browsing with smart phones is simple: "The Internet experience on a handset is not where it needs to be for people to use it daily."

And Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD Group Inc. noted that "the experience compares poorly to the desktop or notebook."

AOL to let users block targeted Web ads

Time Warner Inc's AOL Internet division said on Wednesday that it would let users opt out of online advertisements that are presented to individuals based on the Web sites they have visited.

Such behaviorally targeted ads use "cookies," information that identifies a computer, to keep track of where the user has visited online and send that person commercial messages accordingly.

Internet publishers say this system lets users get ads for products they may be interested in rather than sending useless information, but consumer advocates say it is yet another potential violation of privacy online.

AOL's program will point consumers to the right place to block such ads. Choosing to opt out sends a cookie to a user's computer that blocks the ads from appearing. AOL's system prevents the deletion of the opt-out cookie.

The program will also send "millions" of public service banner ads explaining the policy across the company's own Web sites and on those in which it sells ads.

"Our goal with this program is to engender greater trust for targeted advertising by communicating with consumers in a more visible way, and by providing them more information about their choices," AOL Executive Vice President Curt Viebranz said in a statement.

AOL this year purchased behavioral targeting company Tacoda, which developed the opt-out technology.

The announcement comes ahead of a U.S. Federal Trade Commission meeting starting on Thursday to address issues stemming from the tracking of consumer activities on the Internet.

Although most professional search engine optimizers agree that the green PageRank display has little to do with the actual performance of a website in Google and other search engines, many webmasters still focus on websites with a high PageRank when it comes to link building and website promotion.

How to fake the PageRank of a website:
The PageRank of a web page can be faked with a combination of a 301 redirect and cloaking. It works like this:When a search engine spiders visits a web page URL, the server redirects the spider to a web page with high PageRank. Google assigns the high PageRank to the page with the redirection because it thinks that the pages are identical. When a human web surfer visits the web page URL, the server does not redirect the surfer. That means that the web surfer sees the web page of the faker and the Google toolbar displays the PageRank of the redirected URL:To web surfers, it looks as if the web page has a very high PageRank although it hasn't. Note that this method doesn't increase the rankings of the page in any way. It just influences the PageRank display in Google's toolbar. Google doesn't like cloaking at all so you risk the rankings of your website if you use the method above.

How to check if a website has a faked PageRank:
If you think that a web page might have a faked PageRank then you can do the following simple check:Search Google for "info:domain.com" (without the quotation marks, replace domain.com with the domain that you want to check).If there are no results or if the returned URLs don't match the original URL then it's likely that the PageRank has been faked. If Google returns only one URL for the query and if the URL is the same as the checked URL then the PageRank is okay.
